Policy Moves, City Proves
Two years ago, I was still a student of senior high in Chongqing, a city located in southwestern China. In those days, Chongqing was way far from being considered as an attractive tourist spot. However, the number of tourists swarming in Chongqing keeps amazingly increasing these years due to the video clips of the city shared by the youth on the Internet, such as stunning night views or delicate architecture designs. It is when I return to Chongqing during vacations that I find the once empty boulevards are now flooded with travelers.
Besides, Chongqing is widely known as the “mountain city” of China, which literally refers to its mountainous landscape. Today, Chongqing is far more than this. The mountain hills are now dotted with skyscrapers and a range of well-designed buildings. In addition, over 8000 bridges stand on Yangtze River and Jialing River, which is also the reason that Chongqing is sometimes called the City of Bridge——not only for the quantity of the bridges, but the high standard building technology and worldwide influence as well. For instance, Chaotianmen Yangtze River Bridge, opened to traffic in 2009, is the world's longest through-arch bridge, which carries six lanes in two ways with pedestrian lanes on both sides on the upper deck.
The development of Chongqing over the past 40 years is undoubtedly remarkable. Since the Reform and Opening-up policy was launched, my hometown’s outlook, therefore, has changed into a completely new one. In 1997, two years before I was born, the city was officially established as the country’s fourth municipality as a follow-up of the policy. Fortunately, my grandparents had witnessed how the Liberation Monument, once the highest architecture in 1950s, was gradually surpassed by a growing number of higher skyscrapers. As for me, I am the witness of the dramatic development of the rail transit in Chongqing——from one single line to ten lines extending in all directions.
Moreover, although the Reform and Opening-up might be considered as a mirage when it was first proposed, its successful and reassuring influence can now be readily seen in every aspect of our life. Take the local residents as an example, they love and live in thismagical city with dreams to pursue. One of my friends even tattooed “Made in Chongqing” on her back. Today, we stand proudly as members of the generation born at the perfect timing when the policy propels the city to develop with its fastest pace. As long as we possess a spirit of reform and an attitude of opening-up, one day we will speak for our country at the international stage that we are proud to be made in China.

Reform and Opening Up: Dream it possible
Thoreau went to the woods because he wanted to live deliberately. He wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life. But he forgot one thing that life is a peculiar combination of not merely arts and literature but all most basic stuff of maintaining one’s survival. I myself was blessed because I was born in this opening era, where I no longer have to struggle with the material sustenance.
But my father was not as fortunate as I am. He was a romanticist whose wings had been clipped by my grandfather, or rather, by the hardship of the reality. My father is the eldest child of my grandpa, which entailed him a huge responsibility of supporting the whole family. Therefore, his literary secrets were always regarded as meaningless and useless nonsense, not pragmatic enough.
Yes, “pragmatic”, a coercive word that imposed upon my father and eventually deprived him of the right to dream. Material insecurity and those insurmountable stereotypes inevitably became the gap between the great collections of classics in my father’s bookshelf and a decent job in my grandpa’s eyes.
Today, my grandpa has lived over 80, with his hair whitened and eyesight blurred, sitting in a wheelchair and fighting against diabetes. About a week ago, I went home andwe had a conversation about my academic work in college. I told him that I am doing some literary studies and I read from his eyes a subtle repentance.
Time goes by. It must be unthinkable to my grandfather 40 years ago that his granddaughter would one day sitting in the library thousands of miles away and appreciating Shakespeare and Wilde. But you see, that’s exactly what I am doing.
The Reform and Opening Up has greatly changed our living hierarchy, redefining our mental and physical necessities. Apart from economic soaring and infrastructure improvements, the Reform and Opening up has set us free. I am free to spend the whole semester reading Pride and Prejudice because being so-called pragmatic is no longer a must; I am free to read any books from any countries because we are embracing the world; and I am free to picture my future in a poetic way just like a skylark, singing as I soar and knowing I will eventually find a pleasant field to land. Were it not be the Reform and Opening up, I would not be here, sharing my story and quote from Robert Frost.
“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less travelled by, and that has made all the difference.”

Reform and Opening-up
Ever since having the vaguest concept of right or wrong, I am more than familiar with my father's old-school lecturing which would always begin with the phrase "If you were living in my time." Born in the countryside with seven siblings while living just above the line of extreme poverty, my father was only one common figure among millions of Chinese people who lived in an era of challenge and difficulty.
However, giving the condition that he was brought up in such an environment, I was always amazed by my father's rich knowledge of literature, politics, history, and even international relationships. How come he receive such a good education while "living in his time"? Eventually I got curious, and I asked, "Why do you know so much about liberal arts? Didn't you use to suffer as a kid?" My father answered without hesitation, "Yes, but I was born in a good time."
"Ha, what a good time!" I thought to myself. The very impression my father had given me of the Chinese society in the late 1970s, was nothing but poverty, hard labor, and the lack of basic education. It was a time when my father did not have a guarantee of the next day's meal, and it was a time when nobody in his family would support him to pursue for a better education.
Yet my father said, he was born in a good time. To further explain, it was a rather simple time while accompanied by major reforms and rapid changes. Even though he struggled for food and support once in a while, he was also lucky in a sense that he had a clear and definite goal, which was to climb out of poverty through the one and only means of education. So he worked hard, just in time to meet with the major educational changes brought along by the Reform and Opening-up, which made higher education accessible to all through a fairer, and more systematic examination. Starting from my father, the life of the next generation in his family began to change.
My father continued emphasizing on the importance of learning throughout my childhood, and he did not let his less-fortunate parentage to limit his outlook, as he had the vision that with the Opening-up policy, there will be a demand for well-educated, multilingual professionals. With the best of education supported by my father, I was able use my language proficiency toact as a liaison interpreterfor foreign friends ranging from statesmen to musicians, and to learn about their opinions on China and the world. Ibelieve that it is only by having direct contact with people of all kinds can we get a sober and independent view of the world, which would help us solve its existing problems from a different perspective.
If my father was living in an era of reform, then I am truly benefiting from the process of Opening-up. Forty years after the implementation of this policy, enormous changes have been witnessed, and the great Chinese story is still to be continued.
