主讲人简介

Dr. Tianyou Hu serves as assistant professor in National University of Ireland, Maynooth. He earned his PhD in Management from National University of Singapore (NUS Business School), and two Bachelor’s Degrees in Economics and Literature and an MBA from Peking University. Dr. Hu has published in Journal of International Business Studies, British Journal of Management and European Journal of International Management. His research interests span the areas of strategic management and international business, with a focus on institutional environments for foreign direct investment, as well as interfirm alliances and networks.

讲座摘要

I investigate the international expansion of Small- and Medium-sized Enterprises’ (SMEs) as an outcome of their using asymmetric alliances with large and resourceful partners. Although prior research suggests that benefits and risks coexist in an asymmetric alliance, the key to successful alliance for a SME is its management on power imbalances in the partnership. I contend that SMEs can leverage their unique value to complement their large partners and reduce their dependence. SMEs can also ally with only one large partner exclusively to show a loyalty to the partnership and enhance mutual trust. I obtain support in an empirical test on Japanese small- and medium-sized trading companies (SMTCs) and their alliances with the industrial giant firms, the Keiretsu-affiliated General Trading Companies (Sogo Shosha).
